You Don’t Need One So Big!

Prompt: Tell us about a time when you had to choose between two options, and you picked the unpopular choice.

I can think of a time I made the wrong choice, and it wasn’t so popular a choice with my brother. Nath, and I were going on a spring trip to Montreal. I was excited because Montreal is one of my favourite cities I have been to and it had been about seven or eight years since I had visited.

We booked our flights through Airmiles on Westjet and booked an apartment through AirBnB right downtown so we would be close to the metro which travels all around Montreal.

The week before I was staring at the suitcases down in the pantry. The large black ones were way oversized but my little blue one seemed too small. I decided to go downtown to shop for a good sized piece of luggage. I found a purple suitcase at Winners. I thought it would be big enough but not too big for Montreal and the color ensured I’d be able to claim it easily when the baggage came out at the airport.

I packed all my stuff. Too much for a six day trip. I was happy because I would still have enough room for shopping items. Unfortunately, I forgot Montreal is located on a hill and also I forgot we were taking the bus from our airport to a few blocks away from the apartment. Climbing those six blocks to the apartment building was hell as I dragged my heavy suit case up the hill. Finally, my brother Nath took pity on me and traded me with his little suitcase.

I didn’t need that big of suitcase in Montreal even when I shopped. My blue one would have been fine. Hulling the large purple suitcase to and from the airport on a hill was excruciating. And there was no way I needed to pack that much. All of this was much to the amusement of my brother who told me I wouldn’t need such a big suitcase, to begin with.

Now, unless I’m going somewhere ten days or two weeks,  I bring my little blue suitcase and store a duffle bag for anything extra I might buy on the way home. You never know how long or where, you might have to hull your large suitcase.

  1. I’ve done the same thing many times. 😦 I’ve been traveling for two days a week for the last three years and it didn’t take me too long to figure out that all the “stuff” I thought I couldn’t live without for a short period of time was really not necessary to my survival!

      1. Mandi, I hope you don’t mind me commenting on this thread. But I found out today that Al Forbes has deleted my story off of his Sunday Photo Fiction story board. I have sent him a message asking him why, but he hasn’t responded. What am I suppose to think???

      2. I am not too sure PJ. Al doesn’t seem like he would do that on purpose. He always comes across so nice. But you can’t always tell when you don’t actually get see someone and talk to them face to face and not across the computer screen. I would repost my story for this last week up on the story board. And then make a note in your comments section saying. “Oh I noticed my story didn’t make isn’t on the link in I thought it must have accidentally have been deleted so here it is if you haven’t read it yet. Thanks again to Al Forbes who always does such a great job of hosting SPF.” So basically, if it accidentally was deleted Al can apologize and if he did. Well you’re taking the high road but also calling him out so he will have to tell you if he doesn’t want you to write. But I have a feeling it was accident and not on purpose. I guess I try to think the best of people but if I am wrong we can go from there. Let me know if that helps PJ. I hope everything is okay. Your stories have been really good so I don’t think there is a problem there.

      3. I don’t feel comfortable putting my story back up on the story board. I have asked Al if he deleted my story off the board and if so why? He hasn’t replied to my comment. I don’t have the slightest idea what I did wrong except during the holiday, I didn’t have time to read everyone’s story so I only read the stories of the people that participate in my challenge. I don’t usually do that, but I was too busy to read everyone’s story. This week I read everyone’s story before I realized that mine had been deleted.

      4. I don’t think Al is on WordPress a lot that is just my thinking. I don’t think you did something wrong. Just go ahead and participate in flash fiction as usual on Sunday and in Roger’s one today. See what happens.

      5. Last week I got the strangest pingback to the FFfAW challenge. They didn’t link their story to the board so I did it for them and wrote them and told them if they needed directions for linking up I would be happy to send it to them. They wrote me back and told me they didn’t want to link up to the board because they didn’t care if anyone read their story and they didn’t want to read anyone else’s story. So, I didn’t even reply back to that comment. I wonder if that had something to do with it?? I guess I’m just grasping for straws.

      6. That’s very strange. I guess whoever that person was just wanted to do the challenge for themselves alone. I’m not sure it’s related. I would go about things as usual and if things are off again this week see what to do then 🙂
