Poem: “The Breathing Poem”

Inhale, exhale, breathe the summer sky

And the sweet sickening scent of the purple flowers in the alley

Illuminate the clouds behind pillars of sunshine

And all this time we inhale time we exhale the foul moments that undid us.

Inhale, exhale, breathe life into the iris of sea

Salty and watery, I inhaled and chocked on the water that gives life and takes it back

I inhaled, the collective sigh of dogs in the sunshine soaking in the heat

I exhaled the fragrant Alberta roses that stamp our license plate

Inhale, exhale, breathe life

And the coming of another age, another time to grow older as we descend on breezes in the sun

And the pool water is a hot tub from the heat and we can test the salt in the air

Exhale and breathe pick up the scent of river valley and rain drop

And as the dawn of light becomes

Breathe the catches of light in the curtains

And inhale the wonderful window air
